ELVeS Procedure

What is the ELVeS procedure?

Hold on to your blue suede shoes. ELVeS is back, and he’s doing lasers.

The ELVeS procedure is a new 3rd generation laser used to perform endovascular laser treatment (EVLT)
on varicose veins. This is one of the new alternatives to vein stripping.

Traditionally, EVLT was painful and caused a lot of bruising and swelling.

The ELVeS laser has eliminated much of this inconvenience. It is much more comfortable and causes little
swelling or bruising. This is due to the longer 1470 nm wavelength and the small diameter laser fiber used.

The small, flexible fiber also allows me to treat veins that I could not treat with the VNUS Closure.

This is how it works:

  • Guided by ultrasound, the physician inserts a small laser fiber into the vein being treated.
  • After the laser fiber is correctly positioned, the laser heats up the vein wall, causing it to shrink.
  • This closes the vein without the need for stripping.
  • This in-office procedure usually takes about an hour, and the patient is up and walking immediately.
  • He/she is able to resume normal activities within 1-2 days.

As with the VNUS Closure, this procedure is usually covered by insurance.

VNUS Closure

Until recently, the only remedy for painful, swollen varicose veins was an extensive surgical procedure
called vein stripping. Performed under general anesthesia, it requires hospitalization and a lengthy recovery.

Now, patients diagnosed with varicose veins or venous reflux disease can be treated with the
VNUS® Closure®procedure. This clinically proven, innovative, minimally invasive procedure uses
radiofrequency (RF) energy to close problem veins rather than surgically removing them.

Dr. Nichols is Tidewater's most experienced physician with the VNUS closure procedure.

varicose veinsClosure patients can walk away from the vein procedure and be back to everyday activities – either at home or at work – typically within a day.

All vein treatment is done in the office, avoiding expensive and time consuming hospital care.
